Executive Hiring for a Leading Luxury Retail Brand: Managing Director Role

The Snapshot

A leading luxury fashion retailer needed a Managing Director who could guide the company’s next phase of growth. The organisation required someone with strong commercial judgement, leadership maturity and the ability to manage a multi-channel luxury brand.

We ran a full executive search process and presented three qualified candidates. One was selected and has now resumed.

The Client and Their Vision

Our client is a well-established luxury retailer with a flagship presence in Lagos and an expanding digital audience across Africa. They curate over sixty global fashion brands and serve a growing customer base that values quality, craftsmanship and style.

Their long-term vision is to strengthen their local leadership position and scale across Africa. To do this, they needed a Managing Director who could take responsibility for business performance, guide strategy and support the brand’s ambitions on the continent.

The Business Challenge

As the business grew, the demands on leadership became more complex. The company needed someone who could bring structure, direction and a clear commercial approach. The ideal Managing Director had to understand luxury retail, manage financial performance, strengthen global brand partnerships and guide teams across merchandising, digital, operations and customer experience.

This was a senior appointment that required both strategic and hands-on experience. The organisation needed a capable leader who could support expansion while maintaining high standards across all customer and operational touchpoints. This was why they approached us to manage the search.

Our Strategic Approach

Finding the right Managing Director meant understanding exactly what the client needed and what the role demanded. We began by meeting with their leadership team to learn more about the business, their goals and the type of leader they wanted. It became clear that the role required someone with strong commercial judgement, a solid understanding of luxury retail and the ability to guide both retail and digital operations. We asked focused questions to understand their priorities and what success should look like.

Once we had clarity, we outlined the scope of the search and formed a dedicated team to handle the assignment. Together with the client, we agreed on timelines, communication steps and the level of support they expected throughout the process.

We then created a detailed profile of the ideal candidate. This included experience in leading brand-driven businesses, managing performance across multiple channels, working with global fashion partners and building high-performing teams. We also highlighted important behavioural traits such as good judgement, calm leadership and a strong sense of accountability.

With this profile in place, we started sourcing candidates from our senior network, industry contacts and trusted referrals. We reviewed each candidate’s experience and assessed their readiness to lead a growing luxury brand. Those who met the technical and behavioural requirements were invited for deeper interviews to evaluate their leadership style, commercial understanding and cultural fit.

At the end of the process, we presented three strong candidates who aligned with the client’s expectations and were capable of taking full responsibility for the business. Each profile was supported by clear assessments and our recommendations to guide their final decision.

The Transformative Outcome

The client completed their final interviews and selected a preferred candidate. The Managing Director has now resumed and is fully leading the business. They are shaping strategy, managing performance across all channels and supporting the company as it expands its influence within Nigeria and across Africa.

The organisation now has the leadership stability and clarity needed to move forward with confidence.

What’s Next?

With a capable Managing Director in place, the company is better positioned to strengthen its retail and digital operations, deepen its relationships with global luxury brands and focus on long-term growth across key African markets. The new leader is already guiding internal teams and supporting the company’s plans for a stronger and more structured future.
